9/24/2023 0 Comments Freedom high school seniors![]() Graduation speakers this year celebrated their resilience, like principal Rebecca Morrisey of Topeka High School in Kansas. MCCAMMON: The class of 2023 started high school before the pandemic and spent the end of their freshman year and subsequent years navigating a new reality. UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Your last four years have been anything but normal. MCCAMMON: This year, there's a common thread. UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: I just want to extend my personal congratulations to our graduating class. If it has spikes or dips, then students from certain racial groups are taking the course at higher rates than students from other racial/ethnic groups.MCCAMMON: High school seniors across the country are filing into auditoriums and filling up gymnasiums and football bleachers, all to celebrate their accomplishments, receive their diplomas and take in words of wisdom from their commencement speakers. If the shaded area looks like a circle, then students from all racial/ethnic groups are taking that advanced course at about the same rate. If the shaded area is very small, then very few students from any racial/ethnic group have access to that type of course at this school. ![]() ![]() How to read the radar graphs under By Race/Ethnicity: look at both the shape and size of the shaded area. Schools are designated as “far more equal” or “more equal” if they fall in the more balanced quarter or half of schools, respectively, and “less equal” or “far less equal” if they fall in the least balanced half or quarter of schools, respectively. These classes mix students with special needs and general education students in one room, and are headed by two teachers, one a specialist in special education. SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school offers both small "self-contained" classes and integrated co-teaching (ICT) classes. The lunchroom is cheerful, with round burgundy tables and student murals on the walls. It is wheelchair accessible and has no metal detectors or cameras. ![]() The building is colorfully bright and clean and features a well-equipped library and technology lab. The school is in a brick building across the service road of the Sheridan Expressway. A partnership with the Children's Aid Society Bronx Family Center provides students with access to medical and dental services. The school hosts peace fairs to target neighborhood violence and offers Saturday parent academies to encourage family engagement. Students get good advice applying for college and financial aid, according to the city’s Quality Review. Although attendance and graduation rates are below the citywide average, the school does a better job than schools with similar populations, according to the city’s School Performance Dashboard. Most students come in with weak academic skills, and many have special needs. The National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado gave Fannie Lou Hamer a gold “School of Opportunity” award in 2015 for its work with low-income students. Students and staff agree the school is safe teachers work together as a team and uniformly recommend the school to prospective parents, according to school surveys. Teachers work hard to engage students in interesting projects-such as testing the quality of the water in the Bronx River.
